Diahann Carroll was a legendary actress and singer known for TV roles Julia and Dynasty. My paternal grandmother was a nurse just like Diahann’s character, nurse Julia! In a 1984 interview she addressed her Dynasty character Dominique Deveraux saying, ‘I wanted to be the first Black b!tch on television’. In other words, Diahann wanted to play assertive characters to break free from subservient representation of Afro-Americans.
