The gift of being a full-time artist is taking charge of my own health in my own time. Relying on the institution that employs me to care about my health and wellbeing by honoring policies and laws was too great a disappointment, and often times a risk. I’ve been told ‘no’ when asking to use my sick or vacation days for doctor’s appointments, but at most jobs I did not have PTO at all. Worse still, when I was dealing with sexual harassment and bullying at work from fellow staff or supervisors, it was very uncomfortable to advocate for my health because a predator and a bully will weaponize anything!
Working as a full-time artist on my own schedule means I can prioritize my overall health and care for my invisible disabilities with dignity. Listing them all here is not the point of my post, but I can stop painting to use the bathroom anytime I want. I don’t have to ask to pee! I can eat a snack at my desk when my blood sugar is low without an office Nosey Nancy criticizing what I eat. I can take the day off for cramps and lie down without retaliation.
Another dimension to the topic is that I can use my art to express myself regarding my body, my health, and disabilities. Visualizing my thoughts and emotions about my physical self in the privacy of my studio has been very cathartic which translates into the confidence to share my thoughts on health related matters and my art itself.
Have a Pleasant Day!
