Whatcha Say: Janet Hubert

But, you took all that away from me with your words. You know, words can kill. I lost everything. Reputation, everything. Everything. And, I understand you were able to move forward. But, you know those words, you calling a Black woman ‘difficult’, in Hollywood, is the kiss of death. It’s the kiss of death and it’s hard enough being a dark-skinned Black woman in this business. But, I felt it was necessary for us to finally move forward. And, I’m sorry I have blasted you to pieces.

-Janet Hubert with Will Smith, HBO Max Fresh Prince 30th Reunion Special, Nov. 2020

Words evaporate in real-time coming from the mouth of a bully. They disappear in seconds and the bully moves on with their life while the target is left with cuts and scars. I know what it feels like to see your real-life tormentors freely move upward in the world without consequence. Rarely do we get an apology and the closure we crave. To see Janet receive the recognition she deserved after all this time was healing for so many. Yes, it’s time; to move forward through space and reclaim the opportunity ahead with dignity.
